Description

The sports climbing area "Ostrovica" is located next to the picturesque village of Ostrovica in the municipality of Lišane ostrovičke at the foot of the peak of Orlovača at a height of 405 m. Under the peak itself is a limestone rock, known to the local population as "Markova greda" with a width of about 500 m. In the left part, the rock is divided into two levels (sectors A, B and C) with a somewhat more modest height of up to 13 m, and climbing routes are mostly easier. On the right part (sector D), the rock is much higher, up to 35 m high, and there are more demanding routes on it. The rock is mostly compact limestone, and in sector D there is also a layer of conglomerate, which is of lower quality and compactness in places, so caution is recommended. The characteristics of the rock are slightly tilted or vertical to slightly overhanging slabs and numerous cracks. The orientation of the rock is south and southwest, which makes it ideal for climbing from October to June, while in the summer months, due to the lack of shade, climbing is difficult. The rock is very well sheltered from the storm, however, it is exposed to the south.
From the climbing area, there is a wonderful view of the very photogenic monolithic limestone tower, which the locals call "Grad'na", and in recent times the name Mačkov kamen (Cat's stone) has become popular, after a frequent local surname. According to historical records, the Ostrovica fortress was located on that tower, which was destroyed in the 17th century. The view from the climbing area extends further to the spacious fertile fields near the village of Ostrovica, to the area of Lake Vrana and all the way to the islands of the Šibenik water area.
