Getting to Tersanas cave and/or the world-famous Balos Beach requires a bit of preparation and navigational awareness. Starting from Kissamos, you’ll head west toward the Gramvousa Peninsula.
You can follow the main road through the traditional village of Kaliviani, or if you feel like, navigate the narrower shortcuts through the local fields.
Once the asphalt ends, you will face a dirt road that you follow for roughly 20–25 min.
Caution, the road is rugged and can be quite taxing on standard rental cars.
Park near the abandoned house within the fenced area.
Note: This is active grazing land. If you have a dog, keep it on a leash. The local shepherds are protective of their goats and sheep, and a hunting dog can cause significant issues.
There are three primary ways to reach the climbing sector from the parking area, depending on your gear and time.
1. Straight down toward the sea. This one is the fastest but requires a 30m abseil. Locate the station to the right of the cave. Bring a dedicated rope to leave for the day so you can ascend/prusik back up later.
2. Walk back along the road to the end of the fence, then descend the ravine to the coast. From there it's a moderate hike along the coastline. ~40mins.
3. Drive further toward Balos to the last big left-hand turn visible from the house, then hike back across the slope. (Path is visible from the dirt road) After the slope you have to do a semi steep descent under a distinct red overhang and continue along the coastline as well. ~50mins.
