Approach: Park in the Dove Stone Reservoir pay and display car park, the entrance to which lies approximately 600m east of the village of Greenfield on the A635 Holmfirth road. Note: turning onto the car park approach road is only permitted for traffic coming from the west (Greenfield). Those approaching from the east (Holmfirth) will need to drive as far as the first roundabout in Greenfield and then double back. From the far end of the car park continue walking along the road, passing the buildings of the Dovestone Sailing Club. Approximately 600m from the parking area there is a bridge crossing a small river (Chew Brook): immediately before this turn right onto a well-marked footpath following the riverbank. After 20m turn right again onto a smaller path heading diagonally uphill, and follow this for approximately 400m to where it splits, just before a wire fence. Take the right-hand fork, leading uphill to where it joins a horizontal trail, just before a wooden stile. There are now two options:
1) Starting just to the right of the stile, follow a vague trail, which winds its way up the hillside passing between the many large boulders.
2) Cross the stile and continue leftwards for about 30m to reach a well-marked footpath leading directly uphill, keeping just left of a dry streambed. Both ways lead to the left-hand side of the crag and both ways ensure a good leg pump! (30 - 40 minutes from the parking area).
